Institute of Athletic Health Care and Research, Inc.
Providing a service to the athletic programs in the community and pursuing research in the field of sports medicine is the primary goal of the Institute of Athletic Health Care and Research, Inc. Under the direction of the late Stephen C. Hunter, MD, The Hughston Foundation created the Institute to provide low cost, effective pre-participation screenings for area athletes. One of the primary objectives of the examination is to detect conditions that could place the athlete or other participants at risk for injury. Athletes from more than 20 area high schools are screened each year.
Screenings are held twice a year at a local high school facility. Before arriving, you should have completed the consent form and the physical form. You cannot be screened without these forms. Athletes who participate in fall sports are screened in early summer, and those who participate in winter and spring sports are screened in the fall session.
Since 1976, the Institute has completed over 50,000 high school pre-participation screenings. The cost for each athlete is $7.00 per screening. Four dollars of this amount is placed in an account set aside for that athlete’s school to be used for athletic training equipment and supplies. The remainder is used to cover the cost of the supplies and materials used at the screenings.
