Live Broadcasts
Often, The Hughston Foundation partners with local television stations and organizations to bring educational programs to the community.
At the Live at 5 – Total Hip Arthroplasty, 150 guests gathered in The Hughston Foundation auditorium for a total joint experience on August 24, 2004. With the combined efforts of The Hughston Foundation, The Arthritis Foundation, and WTVM News Leader 9, Carlton G. Savory, MD, spearheaded and performed a live total hip arthroplasty for local and regional viewers.
The week prior to the live surgery, Dr. Savory worked with WTVM News Leader 9 staff to provide several prelude spot-light segments regarding the various forms of arthritis, surgical and non surgical treatment options, as well as cutting-edge technology currently used during surgery, which included mini incision THA and ceramic versus non-ceramic bearing surfaces.
Crow Gudger, MD, moderator during the surgery, fielded questions from the audience, answered, and at times redirected questions to Dr. Savory. The event inspired many sophisticated and challenging questions ranging from intra-operative technique to patient selection for the various bearing surfaces. According to the audience survey results, there is a strong desire for future educational programs such as the Live at 5 – Total Hip Arthroplasty presentation in our community.
